Social Security Wrongly Marks Up to 12,000 Dead
| 99.7% |
How accurate the Social Security Administration says its death records are. |
Each year, 7,000 to 12,000 living Americans are mistakenly listed as dead in Social Security records. Why? A single mistyped digit can do it. The agency says it is 99.7% accurate, but a wrong entry can halt Medicare (government health insurance for people 65 and older), freeze bank accounts and block prescriptions. Rare, but a very bad day at the pharmacy counter.
|
➜ Do this
If a parent's benefits or prescription coverage suddenly stop, the fix starts with an in-person visit to a local Social Security office. Look up the nearest office's address and hours now.

Bank Fees Can Quietly Cost $100 a Year
Many banks charge monthly account fees of $5 to $10. Over a year, that can add up to $100 or more. Some also charge if your balance dips too low or when you move money between accounts. With prices up 3.7% in a year, cutting fees is one way to keep more of each paycheck.
|
➜ Do this
Open your last bank statement and look for lines like "monthly maintenance fee" or "minimum balance fee." Add up a year's worth, then ask your bank how to avoid them or compare no-fee accounts.

$2 Million Saved Puts You Near Top 10%
Having $2 million saved puts you around the top 10% of Americans by net worth (what you own minus what you owe). But being ahead of most people doesn't mean you're ready to retire. For many 65-year-olds it could be plenty. What counts is whether it covers your own plans.
|
➜ Do this
Sketch the retirement you want: where you'd live, how often you'd travel, what health care might cost. Put a yearly dollar figure on it. That number matters more than any savings average.

A $20,000 Roth Move Could Cost $4,400
A Roth conversion means moving money from a pretax retirement account, like a traditional IRA, into a Roth IRA. You pay the tax at the time you move it. Convert $20,000 while in the 22% tax bracket (the rate on the top slice of your income) and the tax bill could be about $4,400. Timing matters because the amount counts as income that year.
|
➜ Do this
Find the "taxable income" line on your last tax return and look up which bracket it falls in. That rate sets the tax you'd owe on any amount you move.

30-Year Mortgage Rate Dips to 7.24%
The average 30-year mortgage rate fell to 7.24% from 7.32% last week, the lowest in over a month, Freddie Mac says. Why? Rates follow inflation, the Fed's interest-rate choices (the Fed is the US central bank) and the economy's outlook. With prices up 3.7% in a year, rates are still well above last year's 6.17%. A small dip, a big hill.

➜ Do this
If you're getting a mortgage quote, ask the lender how long a rate lock lasts (a promise to hold your quoted rate) and whether it costs anything. Rates move weekly.

➜ 💰 Money Move of the Day
Check If You're Getting Your Full 401(k) Match
|
|
Log in to your work retirement plan (or ask HR) and find two numbers: the percent of your pay you put in, and the most your employer will match. |
|
|
A match is free money your company adds when you save, so if you put in less than the limit, you're leaving some on the table. |
|
|
Write both numbers down so you know whether there's a gap to close. |

🔢 One Number
$4,400
Possible tax bill on moving $20,000 into a Roth
| $22 |
At the 22% tax rate, roughly $22 of every $100 you move goes to tax, which is how $20,000 becomes about $4,400. |
|
Moving money into a Roth IRA (a retirement account where withdrawals later are tax-free) can pay off over time, but the tax is due right away, so it helps to know the cost first. |

The bond rate affects loan and mortgage rates. The fear gauge rises when investors are nervous. Index closes are from Oct 30; mortgage rates are national averages from Freddie Mac's weekly survey, and the rate you're offered depends on your credit score and down payment. 🪙 Gold, Silver & Bitcoin
Per ounce for gold and silver, per coin for Bitcoin (metals as of Oct 30).
Day ▼ 3.3% | Week ▼ 2.7% | Month ▼ 6.9% |
Day ▼ 5.9% | Week ▼ 8.6% | Month ▼ 18.3% |
Day ▲ 0.4% | Week ▼ 4.1% | Month ▼ 8.7% |
Gold & silver this week: Gold slid about 2.7% this week to $3,899 an ounce, and silver fell about 8.6% to $49.10. The usual drivers hardly budged: interest rates after inflation, the value of the US dollar and expected inflation were all nearly flat, so none of them explains the drop. Silver fell harder than gold, and over the past month gold is down about 7% and silver about 18%.
What usually moves gold & silver (past week):
Interest rates after inflation: 2.63% ▼ 0.01 pts (lower rates tend to help gold) US dollar strength: ▼ 0.07% (a weaker dollar tends to help gold) Expected inflation: 2.34% ▲ 0.00 pts (inflation worries tend to help gold)
Gold is worth about 79× silver per ounce. Bitcoin: Bitcoin (a digital currency not run by any government) slipped about 4.1% this week to $77,480, and it is down about 8.7% over the past month. It edged up 0.37% on the latest day, so the week's loss was not a sudden plunge.
