📉 Markets · Lead story
Alphabet Drops 12%, Pulling Tech Stocks Lower
Stocks ended lower Thursday. The S&P 500 (an index of 500 big U.S. companies) slipped 0.3%. Why? Alphabet, Google's parent, fell more than 12% after its sales missed expectations and it spent more cash than it took in. That revived worries about AI costs. Still, eight of 11 market sectors rose. For long-term savers, this is one day: 0.3% of $50,000 is about $150.

Open Enrollment Is the Time to Check HSAs
Open enrollment is the yearly window to pick your work benefits. Financial planners say a health savings account (HSA) deserves a look. It's an account for medical costs with unusual tax breaks. Some planners also see it as a long-term investing account and call it 'better than a Roth' (a retirement account where you pay tax now and withdraw tax-free later).
|
➜ Do this
On your enrollment form, find out whether your health plan qualifies for an HSA and whether your employer adds money to it.

The Portage, Indiana, city council approved a $59 million budget for 2027. At the last minute, it added pay raises for elected officials and city employees. A city budget is the plan for spending what residents pay in local taxes and fees. Pay is one line in it, and this one changed late.
|
➜ Do this
Search your own city's website for its budget. Find the staff pay line and the services your local taxes cover.

Florida Food Bank Opens Hub Serving 250,000 Weekly
Treasure Coast Food Bank opened a new 132,000-square-foot center in Fort Pierce, Florida. It serves about 250,000 people each week across four counties. Why build it? Its work was spread over five locations. Now storage, meals, benefits help and job training share one roof. The kitchen can make up to 25,000 meals a day in a disaster.
|
➜ Do this
Ask your local food bank whether it helps people apply for food benefits. Many do this alongside handing out groceries.

Economy Grew 3.4%, But Prices Rose 3.6%
The U.S. economy grew at a 3.4% yearly pace last quarter, its fastest in a year. But prices in September were up 3.6% from a year ago. Inflation-adjusted disposable income (what's left after taxes, measured in buying power) fell 0.3% for the month. In plain terms, something that cost $100 a year ago now costs about $103.60.
|
➜ Do this
Compare your last raise to 3.6%. If your pay rose by less, your paycheck buys a little less than it did a year ago.

📘 Term of the Day
Index fund
A fund is a basket that holds small pieces of many companies at once. An index fund simply copies a set list of companies, like the S&P 500, instead of trying to pick winners.
For example: Alphabet fell more than 12% on Thursday, yet the S&P 500 slipped only 0.3%, because one company is just a small slice of a list of 500. |

The bond rate affects loan and mortgage rates. The fear gauge rises when investors are nervous. Index closes are from Oct 29; mortgage rates are national averages from Freddie Mac's weekly survey, and the rate you're offered depends on your credit score and down payment. 🪙 Gold, Silver & Bitcoin

Day ▼ 3.0% | Week ▼ 5.7% | Month ▼ 15.7% |
Day ▼ 0.4% | Week ▼ 4.4% | Month ▼ 7.3% |
Gold & silver this week: Gold slipped 0.42% this week, while silver fell much more, 5.72%. The usual clues leaned slightly the other way: interest rates after inflation dipped to 2.67% (down 0.09 points) and the US dollar eased 0.07%, which often helps gold and silver. Those changes were tiny, so they don't explain the drop well, and silver's bigger swing may also reflect its use in things like solar panels and electronics, though these figures don't show that.
What usually moves gold & silver (past week):
Interest rates after inflation: 2.67% ▼ 0.09 pts (lower rates tend to help gold) US dollar strength: ▼ 0.07% (a weaker dollar tends to help gold) Expected inflation: 2.35% ▲ 0.03 pts (inflation worries tend to help gold)
Gold is worth about 79× silver per ounce. Bitcoin: Bitcoin (a digital currency not backed by any government) fell 4.44% this week to $77,475, and it is down 7.27% over the past month. Big swings like this are common for Bitcoin, and the figures here don't point to a single cause.
