🏦 Fed · Lead story
Fed Keeps Rates Steady; Two Wanted Increase
The Fed, the U.S. central bank, kept its main interest rate at 3¾% to 4%. This is the rate that steers what banks charge for loans. Ten members voted to hold. Two wanted a quarter-point increase. Why? Inflation (prices rising over time) is still high, even though the economy and hiring look solid. This meeting gave credit card and loan rates no new push up or down.
|
➜ Do this
Find the interest rate (APR) on your credit card statement. If it is variable, it tends to follow the Fed's rate, so today's hold means no change from this decision.

🏘️ Housing
HOA Fees Become a Second Housing Bill
For millions of homeowners, HOA fees are creeping higher. An HOA (homeowners association) is the group that runs a neighborhood or condo building and charges monthly dues. Buyers tend to focus on the price and the mortgage rate, so the dues get less attention. They can quietly add up, like a second mortgage payment with no payoff at the end.
|
➜ Do this
Before buying, ask the HOA for the current monthly fee, how much it rose in recent years, and whether it plans any extra charges. Then add that to your monthly housing budget.

One in Three Delayed Buying Over Credit Fears
A survey by Experian, a credit reporting company, found 34% of people put off exploring homeownership because they assumed their credit score wouldn't qualify. Why? Prices, interest rates, daily costs and saving a down payment all make buying feel out of reach. Researchers say starting earlier helps. So can counselors, and using rent and utility payments to show lenders you pay on time.
|
➜ Do this
Don't guess. Ask a nonprofit housing counselor or a lender what score and down payment you'd need, and whether your on-time rent history can count.

Airline Card Fee Rises First Time Since 2018
American Airlines raised the annual fee on its Citi AAdvantage rewards card. That's the first increase since 2018. A rewards card earns points or miles when you spend. American joins other airlines and banks that have raised fees on their travel cards. For cardholders, it means paying more each year just to keep the card, whether or not you fly.
|
➜ Do this
Look at your renewal notice for the new fee. Then add up what miles and perks you actually used last year. If they're worth less than the fee, you may want a cheaper card.

More Seasonal Jobs Posted, But Not at Stores
Companies have posted more seasonal jobs in 2026 than in 2025. The extra openings come from jobs outside retail. Major retailers are leaning on their permanent staff instead of hiring many temps. Experts call the signals mixed. In short, holiday work is out there, just not always behind a store counter.
|
➜ Do this
If you want holiday income, search beyond store jobs. Ask about the hourly pay, the weekly hours and whether the role can turn permanent.

➜ 💰 Money Move of the Day
Find Out What Your Credit Cards Cost Per Year
|
|
Open each card's app or latest statement and search for "annual fee" (a yearly charge just for keeping the card). |
|
|
Jot down each fee and the month it hits. |
|
|
If a fee costs more than the perks you actually used, ask the issuer about a no-fee version before closing the card, since closing one can dip your credit score. |

Share who put off exploring homeownership over credit fears
About one in three people didn't even start looking at buying a home because they assumed their credit score was too low, and building a record of on-time rent and utility payments can help show lenders you pay reliably.

🏘️ xAI offers home buyouts near data center
A company owned by xAI is reportedly offering to buy homes near its Mississippi data center, but only from owners who don't join a lawsuit over it. A realtor reportedly said the plan covers 418 homes, and renters say they've been given 60 days' notice to leave.
➜ Why it matters to you People living near big projects can face a hard choice between selling and taking legal action, and renters may get little warning before they have to move. Read more → |

📘 Term of the Day
Annual fee
An annual fee is a yearly charge a bank adds to your credit card just for owning it. You pay it whether you use the card a lot, a little, or not at all.
For example: If a travel rewards card has a $100 annual fee, that is $100 a year you owe to keep the card, even in a year when you take no trips, much like a gym membership you pay for whether you go or not. |

The bond rate affects loan and mortgage rates. The fear gauge rises when investors are nervous. Index closes are from Oct 27; mortgage rates are national averages from Freddie Mac's weekly survey, and the rate you're offered depends on your credit score and down payment. Gold & silver this week: Gold slipped about 2% this week to $4,064 an ounce, and silver fell about 6% to $53.85. Two things that usually help these metals leaned the other way: rates after inflation (called real interest rates) edged down, and the US dollar was slightly weaker. Prices fell anyway, so those factors didn't line up with the drop, and expected inflation didn't change, so it pushed neither way.
What usually moves gold & silver (past week):
Interest rates after inflation: 2.66% ▼ 0.14 pts (lower rates tend to help gold) US dollar strength: ▼ 0.07% (a weaker dollar tends to help gold) Expected inflation: 2.35% ▲ 0.00 pts (inflation worries tend to help gold)
Gold is worth about 76× silver per ounce. Bitcoin: Bitcoin ended the week about 2% lower at $81,244, and it is down nearly 4% over the past month. That's a milder week than silver had, and a small dip next to Bitcoin's usual ups and downs.
